SMALL KITCHEN ISLAND IDEAS
Having an island in your small kitchen can become a reality if you follow these simple tips.
Most kitchen island ideas include a bookshelf, a wine rack, pull out drawers for extra storage, extra counter top space and maybe a counter overhang to serve as a breakfast bar type seating.
Small kitchen islands may be portable on wheels or permanently built in. It's important that the island functions efficiently in your kitchen.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHILE DESIGNING YOUR ISLAND
1. Space it out. Don't obstruct access to the kitchen triangle, that is the sink, stove and refrigerator. Also there should be at least 36 inches of clearance on all sides of the island.
2. Storage requirements and amenities. Islands are a great way to add features to your kitchen that are lacking, like a pul out cutting board, a prep sink , even a small fridge or microwave. You can also add vertical slots for storing trays , open shelving for cookbooks, glass fronted cabinet for glasses and pull out basket storage for vegetables.
3. Size of the island. It should be minimum 4 feet long and 2 feet deep and there should be a 3 foot walk space around the island. The ideal height should be 42 inches if you plan to use it with bar stools, or the counter can be 36 inches and the overhang can be 15 inches wide and 42 inches high.
4. Size of kitchen. Experts recommend that unless your kitchen is 8 feet wide by 12 feet long, one should not even consider a counter.
5. Choose the right island style. Decide whether you want open or closed storage, open shelves visually expand the look of your kitchen they may create clutter if kept untidy. Closed storage may make the island look bulky and may obstruct traffic when the shutters are opened. So the best option is to get an island that offers a combination open and closed storage.
